Cable confusion.

So after a scary first few look at cables and chargers, its not too hard. There are only two types of cable

Type 1:

Citroen C-Zero, Ford Focus Electric, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Kia Soul EV, Nissan Leaf 2012 – 2017, Peugeot, Renault Zoe, Toyota Prius, Vauxhall.

Type 2:

Audi Etron, BMW i3, Hyundai, Jaguar, KIA, Ranger Rover, Renault, Mercedes Benz EQC, Mini Countryman, Nissan Leaf 2018, Porsche, Smart, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo XC T8.

Which Charging cable suits your car?

The cable that is correct for individual needs of an EV depends  on the model of the car and the power consumption of its inbuilt charger. Electric Vehicles like Volt, Nissan Leaf EV have lower capacity in-built chargers and they will only charge at the rate 3.6kW/h. A fast charger plug-in vehicles like BMW i3 can use a 32 amp supply.

Tethered vs Untethered

It will be much more convenient to buy a tethered EV charger if you are able to have a home charging station.  For visiting a friends house (when we are able to again post COVID) the plug in slow charger will be able to handle this and with a planned fast charge on the way (if the distance is large) it should be easy.

If you do not have off road parking you will need to rely on public charing points, so you will need to obtain a separate charging cable. In cities you can probably charge during the day when you are at work, or if you are lucky enough maybe you can fully charge your car if you live near a super charger.

What size EV charging cable should I buy?

Choosing the size of your EV charging cable comes down to your needs. If you need a cable to stretch around your house to reach your drive, you will need a longer cable ( 15 or 20 meter). If there is only a short distance between your charging station a 3m or 5m charging cable will suffice.

If using a public it would be wise to choose a longer cable, this way you won’t get restricted in a  situation where your ev charging cable won’t reach your car.

A longer charging cable is more expensive,
